Some good news from Ottawa this week. International trade minister Peter Van Loan has announced his government will introduce legislation this autumn to ratify Canada’s free trade agreement (FTA) with Panama. Van Loan and Panamanian Commerce and Industry Minister Roberto Henriquez signed the agreement last May, but enabling legislation must be passed by parliament before the FTA can go into effect. The agreement will see tariffs come off Canadian goods including agricultural products, wood, pulp and paper, seafood, iron and steel, machinery, autos, aerospace products and pharmaceuticals.
