Business without Borders has commissioned a major new study of Canadian companies’ attitudes toward building their businesses outside Canada. The survey was conducted between April 15 and May 4 by Rogers Connect Market Research, a division affiliated with Business without Borders through Rogers Media Inc. Every quarter we’ll be presenting a different facet of the survey’s findings, drawn on the opinions of 833 Canadian decision-makers, whose company companies have revenues in excess of $1 million a year.

The first results, shown below, pertain to problems that Canadian companies believe hold them back from expanding overseas.

Toby Herscovitch In your stat of 62% of businesses surveyed are not interested in doing business outside Canada, shouldn't you clarify that this is 62% of non-exporting Cdn businesses? Those firms, in turn, according to your survey, represent only about a third of the total firms you surveyed.

Alberto Quiroz I am sorry for those 62% of companies that are just not interested, I wonder where will they find their growth opportunities. For the rest of them that are interested and and worry about the cost, competition, local rules and regulations, as well as for those already doing business internationally concerned about staffing foreing echange and local regulations; they can hire a CITP (Certified International Trade Professional). CITPs obtain their designation from the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) after the successful completion of 8 study modules, experience in the field and a test. FITT is a forum started by business organizations in partnership with the Federal Government since 1992 with the purpose of filling the knowledge gaps and prepare professionals to assist Canadian companies open up foreign markets and assist them abroad. FITT has compiled a wealth of knowledge from experts in International Trade to prepare courses and educational materials for delivery partners like, Colleges and Universities, in Canada and abroad. The knowledge compiled by FITT addresses exactly those concerns that both the exporters and the non exporters have; like the research skills required to understand cultural differences, local rules and regulations, markting, customs and international trade finance. FITT has published a remarkable pre-assessment of the human resources challenges faced by Canadian Businesses in International Trade, which can be downloaded at; http://www.fitt.ca/sectorstudy.htm It is probably one of the best kept secrets for business wishing to expand internationally.
