The official opening of the Global Business Centre in Calgary last week marked a new focus on engaging southern Alberta companies in overseas markets. Alberta SMEs tend to be more skittish than their neighbours in venturing abroad. Only 9% of them are exporting, compared to about 30% in British Columbia. Monica Rovers, international business development manager for Calgary Economic Development (CED) told BUSINESS without BORDERS this week that the centre will assist those firms overcome reticence to expand abroad because of a lack of knowledge or poor comfort levels.
